A Shelbyville man has pleaded not guilty to a charge that he murdered a Frankfort man during an altercation.

Melvin Hawkins, 35, was arraigned in Shelby District Court on Tuesday and is accused of stabbing Rickey Wright, 46, of 2127 Mink Run Road.

According to the Shelbyville police, Hawkins and Wright argued and fought Friday at Hawkins’ Lynne Acres apartment.

Hawkins stabbed Wright in the chest with a knife, police reported. Wright was pronounced dead at the University of Louisville medical center.

Hawkins is being held at the Shelby County Detention Center on a $500,000 full cash bond. He’s scheduled to appear in Shelby District Court at 2 p.m. on Nov. 12.
