The residents of Morning Pointe assisted living center have teamed up with the Franklin County chapter of Church Women United to bring a bit of love to a local nursing home this Valentine’s Day. For the past two weekends, a group of Morning Pointe seniors have made blankets for more than two dozen residents of Golden Living Center, and on Wednesday, several members of Church Women United joined them to help finish the project. The original plan was for the residents to make half the blankets, and the ladies from Church Women United would help finish the rest. But Deborah Bobbitt, Morning Pointe’s activity director, says the seniors enjoyed the project so much that they finished most of the blankets before Church Women United arrived. “They’d get (the fabric) after supper and have them done by the next morning,” Bobbit said, laughing. “Then every morning they’d come out (saying), ‘Are there any more blankets to do?’” The blankets were made by cutting about 5-inch-long strips around the edges of fleece fabric, then forming knots at the end of the strip to create a sort of fringed edge. Using Bingo cards to measure, several seniors on Wednesday were working hard on their blankets. “Well I thought we were going to play Bingo,” resident Oliver Mason joked. “This is a different kind of Bingo,” he said, as the others laughed. Bobbitt said one of the most dedicated blanket-makers was resident Diana Kell, who’s made several blankets on her own. The rest of the group said Kell is the quickest at making blankets because of her knitting skills. “This is something that’s quite different in knitting,” Kell chimed in, as she tied knots in the blanket strips. “I’ll keep on doing this as long as they need help.” Bobbitt says the senior center was looking for a way to give back to local nursing homes, so when someone suggested making blankets for Golden Living, they “just ran with it.” “We were trying to think of the nursing home, and we thought a nice, comfortable blanket to keep them warm would help them out a lot,” Bobbitt said Wednesday as she supervised the blanket project. To help with the project, Bobbitt reached out to the president of Franklin County’s chapter of Church Women United, Linda Axon, who jumped at the opportunity. “We were very excited about it,” Axon said. “It’s something all of our women can do … and they (the seniors) could show us a thing or two.” As for delivering the blankets on Valentine’s Day, Bobbitt said she has a reason. “I just thought what better day than Valentine’s Day, a day of love, to show your love for someone,” Bobbitt said. “I’m sure it’ll put a smile on their faces just to have a nice, warm blanket.”
